Individual Basic Skills Tuition

Who is it for?

It’s for young people who are not attending school, including those with a Statement of Special Education Needs. It’s aimed at year 10 and 11 pupils but may be suitable for some younger young people.

What is it?

The service is provided by YES tutors who all have an enhanced CRB check. The tutor can visit the young person at home if this is appropriate. If not, sessions can be arranged at YES or at another agreed venue. Hours of contact will be agreed by YES, the pupil and the agency which is paying for the service (usually the school where the young person is on-roll). The tutor will provide initial assessment, develop a negotiated learning plan for the young person and deliver the programme.

What’s special?

We work with students individually so they can develop their basic skills by doing things that they are really interested in. This can be working towards a National Qualification in Literacy or Numeracy. It can also be about developing reading, writing and maths by doing something that doesn’t look like schoolwork. Last year, for example, we developed basic skills by building bicycle wheels, constructing ferret runs, making short films and soundtracks.

Where and when?

These details are discussed between you and the YES tutor so everybody is happy. Usually, we offer between one and six hours per week.

How much does it cost and how do I find out more?
